SEASON 1990 - 91

A new season and a new kit & sponsor. Cleanservice, Lincoln bought us a maroon and sky blue kit, and the goalkeepers kit was something to behold !! On the playing side,  Phil Varlow had signed, & Dave Smith returned to the fold mid season. Young Rick Beaumont, proved a good clubman as he turned out 13 times as a sub during the season.  Maz would miss the whole season due to his broken leg. A certain Steve Harisson was named in the squads for the friendly games & Hartsholme's little mascot is still around today !! With one of the smallest squads, this would turn out to be a very good season,  both in the Ron Eaglen & County Cups and concluded with a tense finish in the league.

Our first friendly was a 2-2 draw with Wild Life, then a 9-0 tonking from a Lincoln Utd Saturday eleven. A 4-1 victory at Welton  (Balfe 2, Simon & Ady Potter ) followed before the big kick off in the Preliminary round of the County Cup, a home tie against Vence FC of Stamford, which resulted in a 5-0 win for us, goals from Rick Skinner, Simon, Ady Coy, Ady Potter & Mick Reynolds.

First game in the league was Butcher & Beast away, where a double from hit man Reynolds secured a 2-2 draw. Andy Sutton starting our first five games in goal. Next up FV Jerusalem, & again a Reynolds strike gave us a 1-0 home win. Mid October, and Birchwood were our opponents, and goals from Andy Balfe & Simon saw us come back from two down to snatch a point, 2-2. The second round of the County Cup saw us travel to Kirton, & Graves Park SC where the three midfielders, Pete, Noel & Simon scored one a piece to give us a 3-0 away win.

The last game in October , was Waddington Utd at home, two for Simon & Mick gave us a good 4-1 win, and a place mid table. Pat came into the side, for the Ron Eaglen cup game against Scothern on BRSA's pitch and another Simon goal ensured a 1-0 victory. A mid week game under the Ashby Avenue floodlights, against  Martin Burnett's  table topping Lincoln Utd Juniors, was probably one of the best perfomances Hartsholme have produced in my time with the club, we won 4-1 with Stuart Locke claiming a hat-trick & Pete netting the other.

The 11th November, saw us entertain rivals Greenbank at home, and a late Kenny Shipman goal gave them a 1-0 victory.

Our exploits in the County Cup continued with a 2-1 home victory against Tritton Rangers, an Ady Coy strike plus an own goal saw us through to the last sixteen. Ady was on the goal trail the following week, with a hat trick,  in the 6-2 trouncing of George & Dragon, Noel, Mick & Stuart the other scorers. Back to the Ron Eaglen Cup and yet another win, down at the Cowpaddle against Turks Head, a Simon Coy strike was enough to secure a 1-0 win. The second week in December, we were back to action in the league, & trounced Green Barrel, who were 2nd in the table, 5-1. Goals from Mick, two for Ady Coy & two for Stuart.

So to the County Cup, we hired Asby Avenue, to entertain Westcliffe, from Scunthorpe. After 90 minutes it was still goalless, but the two Coys, Ady & Simon, struck in extra time to win the game 2-0 & put us through  to the quarter finals. Yet again after a good cup win we lost in the league a week later at Birchwood Colts, we took the lead through Ady Coy, but were beaten 3-1 in the end. This left us three points behind the league leaders, Lincoln Utd. but with four games in hand.

The first game of the new year was against Ivy Tavern in round three of the Ron Eaglen Cup. Pat was playing his tenth consecutive game, and would finish the season  in between the 'sticks'. As throughout this seasons campaign, we stuck to an attacking 4-3-3, but now had Pete injured for the next four games, and the Ivy proved too strong for us, and we lost 2-0.

We didn't start off the New Year at all well, for in the next game, away at bottom placed George & Dragon, Sutty playing up front, we lost 1-0. The big game arrived the following week when we took on Kingfisher Seafoods of Grimsby in the Quarter Finals of the County Cup, at half time it was 0-0, but three second half goals, killed us off, 3-0 the final score. So all that was left now was the league, and finally we won in the last Sunday of January, 2-1 away at Waddington Utd, with a Simon penalty and Noel on the score sheet.

Pete returned from injury for the make or break game, against second  placed Lincoln Utd, a win would keep us in contention for promotion, and after leading1-0 at half time through a Mick goal, the mood was positive, but we conceded two second half goals, and lost 2-1. Up next an away fixture to league leaders Green Barrel, and a return to the team of Dave Smith at right back, who came away with the man of the match vote, as we recorded a great 4-2 victory, 2 goals from Mick, one a piece for Ady Coy & Stuart. March continued in a good vane as we beat Woodhall Spa 3-1 at home, two more strikes from the in form Mick Reynolds and another for Ady. The league was becoming interesting, as we then returned from Aubourn with a 2-0 win, Mick & Simon on the scoresheet. We were 5th in the table with 4 games in hand on the leaders

And so to a home encounter with Cherry Colts, after racing into a 2-0 halftime lead, with two Ady Coy strikes, Gez Creasey & Ian Ward (2) netted for the visitors to give them a 2-3 advantage, but a Simon penalty gave us a share of the spoils. 3-3. So a dropped point at home, next up Scothern away, who were on level points with us, but this didn't show in the result as we hammered them 6-0. Two goals each for Ady, Mick & Simon (1 a penalty). On the following Wednesday night we visited Lincoln Trackback who were now in the title chase, they ran out 3-1 winners with Mick getting the consolation goal, then on the Sunday, Trackback visited the Hartshome, and we inflicted only their second defeat of the season with a Simon penalty & an excellent solo goal from Pete, to give us a 2-1 win.

Due to the cup runs we were now in a run of mid week matches, on Wed 17th April we won 2-0 at Aubourn , Ady Coy getting both, quickly followed by a Friday night game at North Scarle against Greenbank, where we lost 3-1, Simon scored our goal, (and I swear to this day i got the ball from a sliding tackle on Kev Atkins !) Another defeat two days later, losing 3-1 at Woodhall with Mick scoring and on the next Wednesday, a  3-2 loss at home to Scothern, Simon and Ady on the scoresheet. The fixture pile up had certainly caught up with us, with so many games in such a short space of time. With promotion out the window we thrashed Butcher & Beast 6-0 at home, Ady Coy netting four, one a piece for Ady Potter & Simon, then a 2-2 draw at lowly FV Jerusalem, goals from Stuart & an Ady Coy penalty.  The very last game was called off against Cherry Colts and we were awarded the two points.

Overall a great season with little to show at the end, Ady Coy managed 20 league goals in 25 games which was a very good return, Mick & Simon also chipped in with their fair share, making us the second highest scorers in Division One with 63 goals.
